Sunday Worship "Hosanna to the Call to Serve"
John 12:15-16 says, "Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt. These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him."
On this Palm Sunday of 2025, Senior Pastor Travis Tullis reflected on Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem as he anointed new Deacons and an Elder. As a result, we learned that servant leadership, exemplified by Jesus as He made his triumphant entry on a donkey and the calling to serve go hand in hand. The focus scriptures are John 12:12-19, Acts 6:1-7, 1 Peter 5:1-4.
"And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business." Acts 6:1-3. This passage reminds us of the importance of unity and the collective responsibility we all share in serving the people of God.
When we take on leadership roles in the Church, we must follow the example set by Jesus. Consequently, the footsteps we are to follow as we serve are from Him. In fact, while reflecting on Jesus's triumphant entry into Jerusalem, He knew that the praises would turn into persecution and the palms into thorns. However, He chose to do it anyway because His focus was on who He came to serve, being us, and His obedience to His Father, which entailed Him going to the cross. This is how we should understand servant leadership: being aware of all the suffering yet still finding the faith, courage, and strength to serve the people. This is when we truly step into our purpose and glorify God through our calling.
Thank you, Senior Pastor Tullis, for leading us forward and higher together by encouraging us to recognize servant leadership and Jesus's ultimate sacrifice on the cross are one and the same.
